Project OBS Packages

Packages for openSUSE that I build on the openSUSE Build Service (OBS): a nightly OpenSCAD (built from upstream master, so it is newer than what the distributions ship), the lib3mf library it needs, and the AI Usage Monitor widget for KDE Plasma 6. They are private, unofficial home projects, built for 64-bit PCs only (x86_64).

Install

Pick your system, add the repository once, then install. Everything else a package needs (Qt 6, lib3mf, …) is pulled in by zypper automatically.

openSUSE Tumbleweed

# OpenSCAD (pulls in lib3mf2 from the same repository)
sudo zypper addrepo -f https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/joba1:/openscad/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/home:joba1:openscad.repo
sudo zypper refresh # accept the repository signing key when asked
sudo zypper install openscad

# AI Usage Monitor widget (optional, needs KDE Plasma 6)
sudo zypper addrepo -f https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/joba1:/ai-usage-widget/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/home:joba1:ai-usage-widget.repo
sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper install ai-usage-widget

openSUSE Leap 16.0

sudo zypper addrepo -f https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/joba1:/openscad/16.0/home:joba1:openscad.repo
sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper install openscad

# AI Usage Monitor widget (optional, needs KDE Plasma 6)
sudo zypper addrepo -f https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/joba1:/ai-usage-widget/16.0/home:joba1:ai-usage-widget.repo
sudo zypper refresh
sudo zypper install ai-usage-widget

If an OpenSCAD of the distribution is already installed, zypper offers a vendor change to the version from this repository – accept it. To make sure the package comes from here, use sudo zypper install --from home_joba1_openscad openscad.

After installing

  • OpenSCAD: start openscad from the application menu or a terminal.
  • Widget: restart the shell once (systemctl --user restart plasma-plasmashell), then right-click the panel → Add Widgets → AI Usage Monitor.
  • Updates arrive with the normal system update (sudo zypper update; on Tumbleweed sudo zypper dup).
  • Remove: sudo zypper remove openscad ai-usage-widget, and the repositories with sudo zypper removerepo home_joba1_openscad home_joba1_ai-usage-widget (check the exact aliases with zypper lr).

Requirements

OpenSCAD AI Usage Monitor widget
Operating system openSUSE Tumbleweed or openSUSE Leap 16.0 the same
Architecture x86_64 x86_64 (the package itself is architecture independent)
Desktop any; the program uses Qt 6 and OpenGL, so a working graphics driver is needed KDE Plasma 6 (plasma6-workspace, plasma5support6)
Other software nothing to install by hand: lib3mf2 (from this repository), Qt 6, Boost, OpenSSL and the other runtime libraries come as dependencies python3 (standard library only, nothing is downloaded)
Accounts none none for the widget itself; usage figures for a provider need that provider's login (e.g. Claude Code signed in) or API key, entered in the widget settings

Notes:

  • Keep the system up to date. The packages are built against the current Tumbleweed snapshot (Qt 6.11, Boost 1.92 at the time of writing). On an outdated Tumbleweed zypper reports unresolvable library dependencies – run sudo zypper dup first. On Leap 16.0 the build uses the Leap libraries (Qt 6.9).
  • Not available: openSUSE Leap 15.x, other distributions (Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Arch …), 32-bit and ARM machines. For those, build from the upstream sources.
  • OpenSCAD here is a development snapshot, not a release: expect new features, and occasionally new bugs.

Packages and where they come from

All sources are fetched directly from the upstream projects on GitHub by the Build Service's source services – nothing is uploaded by hand except the packaging itself (spec file, changelog, patches).

Package Upstream source Selection Currently built Local changes
openscad github.com/openscad/openscad branch master (always the newest commit) commit bde97fbc of 2026-10-01, package 2026.xx.xx+git.20261001T201700~bde97fbc none; built with Qt 6, experimental features on
lib3mf github.com/3MFConsortium/lib3mf release branch release/2.5.0; a newer release line of the same major version is taken over automatically commit bbbbffb of 2026-02-26, package 2.5.x+git.20260226T014935~bbbbffb (library lib3mf.so.2) one small build fix (#include <algorithm>)
ai-usage-widget github.com/Muddyblack/ai-usage-widget the highest release tag vX.Y.Z (no pre-releases) tag v3.2.0, package 3.2.0 one patch: a fallback icon in the panel when there is nothing to show yet

Status of this table: 2 October 2026. The "Build status" links below always show the live state.

How new versions arrive: once a day the Build Service is told to look at upstream again. OpenSCAD is rebuilt every night from the current master; lib3mf and the widget are rebuilt when upstream has a new commit or release. A build that fails keeps the last good package in the repository, so a failure never breaks an installed system – you just do not get the newer version until it is fixed.

Reading the status: succeeded – built and published; building, scheduled or blocked – wait (lib3mf is built before OpenSCAD, so OpenSCAD may show blocked meanwhile); failed or unresolvable – the newest source does not build yet, the repository keeps serving the last good version.

Licences

OpenSCAD: GPL-3.0-or-later. lib3mf: BSD-2-Clause. AI Usage Monitor: MIT. The packaging files in the Build Service are my own work; the programs belong to their upstream authors.
